L-Tyrosine is a naturally occurring amino acid, and a precursor to dopamine and norepinephrine. Tyrosine is biosynthesized into levodopa (L-Dopa), which is then converted to dopamine, some of which can be converted further into norepinephrine.

Because of its role in the creation of dopamine, tyrosine is commonly paired with stimulants such as amphetamine and ephedrine. Tyrosine supplementation is particularly beneficial to vegetarians and vegans, who may lack protein-rich foods in their diet.
